A Guide to European Travel Authorizations
Everything Americans need to know before their next flight across the pond.
If Europe is calling your name, there are two important travel changes coming that you need to know about before packing your bags. Beginning in 2025, the United Kingdom and countries in the European Union are introducing electronic travel authorizations for Americans and other travelers from visa-exempt countries.
As a professional travel planner who's helped clients curate unforgettable trips across Europe, I’m here to break down everything you need to know about these changes. When it comes to international travel, the last thing you want is to be caught off guard at the airport. Take it from someone who was standing in the check-in line for a flight to Sydney and realized at that moment I needed a visa… I’ve learned since then, but it was not fun.
What is a travel authorization?
To be clear: a travel authorization is not a visa. It’s a new requirement designed to enhance border security by pre-screening travelers before they arrive. This means that even though Americans still don’t need a visa to visit most of Europe, you will soon need prior approval before boarding your flight.
ETIAS: Your Ticket Into the European Union
ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System, and was originally scheduled to begin mid-2025, but is now expected to go live in the last quarter of 2026. Once it’s active, U.S. citizens will need ETIAS authorization to visit 30 European countries within the Schengen Zone.
Some of the most popular countries requiring ETIAS authorization are:
🇫🇷 France
🇮🇹 Italy
🇪🇸 Spain
🇬🇷 Greece
🇵🇹 Portugal
🇩🇪 Germany
🇳🇱 Netherlands
🇨🇭 Switzerland
🇦🇹 Austria
🇭🇷 Croatia
Key Details of ETIAS
Who needs it: U.S. citizens (and nationals of 60+ other visa-exempt countries)
Cost: €7
Validity: 3 years or until your passport expires (whichever comes first)
Stay limit: Up to 90 days within any 180-day period
Application: Online through the official ETIAS website (link to be provided once it launches)
Processing time: Usually within minutes, but allow up to 30 days in rare cases
Age exemptions: Travelers under 18 and over 70 will still need to apply, but won’t pay a fee
ETA: Entering the United Kingdom
ETA stands for Electronic Travel Authorization, and it’s the UK’s equivalent system. The UK has started rolling it out in phases, and Americans will be required to obtain an ETA starting in October of 2025.
Where the UK ETA Applies:
England
Scotland
Wales
Northern Ireland
Including layovers and airport transits
Key Details of ETA:
Who needs it: U.S. citizens and other visa-exempt travelers
Cost: £10
Validity: 2 years or until your passport expires
Application: Online via the UK government’s ETA portal
Processing time: Most approvals are issued within 24 hours, but travelers are advised to apply at least 3 days in advance
Purpose of travel: Tourism, business, short study, or medical treatment
What happens if you don’t have one?
If you do not have an approved ETIAS or ETA at the time of check-in, you won’t be allowed to board your flight or train. This isn’t something you can fix at the airport. That’s why applying in advance is critical, especially if you’re planning multi-country travel, group trips, or peak-season getaways.
My tips for a seamless European vacation
✅ Apply early: Don’t wait until the week before your trip. Give yourself plenty of time.
✅ Check your passport: Is it expiring soon? Make sure you renew before applying, as the authorizations are passport-specific.
✅ Double-check requirements: If you’re visiting both the UK and mainland Europe, you will need both an ETA and ETIAS.
✅ Work with a travel expert: I’ll make sure your paperwork, lodging, and itinerary are perfectly coordinated so you can focus on enjoying your trip.
